EWE hydrogen storage expansion Huntorf

EWE hydrogen storage expansion Huntorf

The EWE Hydrogen Storage Expansion Huntorf project is located in Huntorf, in the federal state of Lower Saxony (Germany), and forms a key part of EWE’s sustainability strategy as well as the extension of its IPCEI hydrogen activities. The project foresees the repurposing of a second existing natural gas salt cavern and the expansion of the associated above-ground installations to enable the storage of gaseous hydrogen, building on the first hydrogen cavern and surface facilities already planned at the site. The hydrogen storage facility is currently in the development phase and is expected to become operational by 2029/2030.

The project will provide a total working gas volume of approximately 77 GWh, with an additional injection capacity of around 9 GWh per day and an additional withdrawal capacity of around 9 GWh per day. Located within the HI West hydrogen corridor, the project benefits from a strategically favourable location with strong connectivity to the core hydrogen network and existing large-scale transport infrastructure, enabling efficient integration into the future hydrogen system.
